Blues, jazz and gospel at Norma's

Bob Sedegreen (keyboard) and Greg Jones (guitar and harmonica) will be performing on Friday 5 October at 8pm at the Norma Richardson Hall in Woodend in a fundraising concert for the Bush Church Aid Society

In 1990 Bob won the Inaugural Jazz Award for Australia's Best Keyboardist.

To play with Bob Sedergreen has been described as the "ultimate armchair ride", to hear him is always exciting and satisfying.

Tickets are priced at $20 for $15 for concessions and are available by emailing woodendanglican@gmail.com or calling Fr Malcolm on 5427 2460

The Bush Church Aid Society places ministers in regional and remote areas of Australia. Locals in these places are removed from cities, live in sparsely populated towns and often don’t benefit from strong support networks of family and friends.

All creatures great and small

We'll be hosting our annual pet service on Sunday 7 October 2012 at 10.30am.

Pets in cages or on leads are all welcome. Cats, dogs, mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds and reptiles in tanks with lids! We’ve not got room for horses or livestock – sorry

“Even if you’ve not got a pet you’re more than welcome to come and join in the fun and come for morning tea in our new hall,”  said Fr Malcolm, Rector at St Mary’s

“Holly and Alexina [church dog and cat] will love to see as many new faces and their pets as possible,” he added

The service will last about an hour and be followed by morning tea in the Norma Richardson Hall.

Here's a fun colouring poster for your little ones.

The story of St Francis

Francis was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Assisi, Italy and he lived the high-spirited life typical of a wealthy young man, While going off to war in 1204, Francis had a vision that directed him back to Assisi, where he lost his taste for his worldly life. On a pilgrimage to Rom, he begged with the beggars at St Peters. The experience moved him to live in poverty.

4 October is the feast of St Francis. It is customary for Catholics and Anglicans to bless animals at this time.

Did you know?

As well as being the patron saint of animals, St Francis is credited with the creation of the first nativity scene in 1223 (a "living" one) having been inspired by his recent visit to the Holy Land where he had been shown Jesus's traditional birthplace. The scene's popularity inspired communities throughout Catholic countries to stage similar pantomimes.

Lovers of quilts head to Woodend

On Friday 19 and Saturday 20 October experts and amateurs alike will join together in Woodend to share their passion for all things quilts and quilting.

“You don’t have to be an expert to love quilts and quilting.  I’m showing the quilt that has been our bed since we got married 40 years ago,” said event organiser Lilla Officer.

Running for two days, this expo includes the opportunity for visitors to see beautiful quilts of all different skill levels, hear from four guest speakers, visit book and quilting shop stalls and have a go at sewing a stich or two.

This exhibition is organised and hosted as a fund-raising event for St Mary’s Anglican Church. It is held from 10amto 4pm in
The Norma Richardson Hall, located at 15 Buckland Street, Woodend’s newest venue.

“The Norma Richardson Hall is brand-new, has great lighting and acoustics and provides us with the perfect space to hold an exhibition of this kind,” commented Sharon Boxshall from Pick up Stiches in Kyneton.

“I’m excited to be sharing my passion at this event,” she added.

Entry to the exhibition is $5 and the guest speaker presentations, taking place in St Mary’s church, are by gold coin donation.

Expert presentations include:  Maureen Chiswell from Quilting Patch.  Maureen will speak on Mennanite and Amish Quilting. Sharon Boxshall from Pick up Stiches in Kyneton speaking on what’s new in Quilting. Mary Dalton explains why she quilts and Kerrie Thomas explains machine quilting.

A full house at Norma's

It was a full house on Sunday 12 August as the Anglican parishioners of Woodend celebrated the dedication of The Norma Richardson Hall.

The Bishop of Bendigo blessed the hall and officially named it after long-serving parishioner Mrs Norma Richardson.  Norma, supported by over 20 members of her family and friends, said “I am truly honoured, I never thought this would happen to me.”

Bishop Andrew praised Norma’s ‘doing’ attitude and thanked the parishioners for their fund raising efforts and their patience during the six-year period without a hall.

“This new hall is a symbol that the Anglican Church is alive and well and open to its wider community,” he said. “It is adaptable and well-equipped, representing something of the way we want the church to be, serving the community”.

The new hall links past and present.  At the entrance is a framed sketch drawn the day after the devastating fire that destroyed the previous hall in 2006. Neil Matterson, a local artist, used charcoal recovered from the old hall to create this magnificent work of art. The hall is also home to a spectacular leadlight window depicting various images of the region, created by local artist Ettore Di Pilla. It is set in a frame rescued from the old hall, and generously restored by David Feltham of St George’s Trentham.

The official opening was attended by Deputy Mayor of the Macedon Ranges Shire Henryka Benson, MP for Macedon Joanne Duncan and MP for Northern Victoria, Donna Petrovich, as well as clergy and parishioners, past and present some who had travelled from as far afield as Hobart and Queensland.

Bette McLaren, a guest from Trentham said in her letter of thanks “You have created a place that is welcoming, practical and beautiful, this is no small feat! There’s lots of light, views from windows, it’s warm, welcoming, with pristine décor and an ambience of friendship and fellowship.”

Kevin Davis showcased the excellent acoustics of the hall by performing   “Gathering Place” on his guitar.  Kevin wrote this song especially for the occasion.

After the formalities it was time for tea and cake.  What a cake!  A chocolate mud cake scale replica of the hall created by Sharyn Franz of Blackbird Cakes, Woodend.

The new hall is 25 squares (270m2) in total and has a capacity of 100 people. The state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment, combined with acoustic panels and variable lighting, make it a high-quality modern venue for events.

To support fund-raising activities The Norma Richardson Hall is available to hire. Located in central Woodend it is the perfect venue for an exhibition, concert, gathering or celebration.
